Survivor Stories: MARY

Mary was pregnant and living with her boyfriend and their two children, Joseph – 8, and Eva – 11. Her boyfriend had been violent toward her for years, and the abuse was only growing as the birth of their new child drew near. Mary was beginning to fear for her life.

After a brutal attack one evening, Mary’s daughter, Eva, called 911. When the police arrived, Mary was beaten beyond recognition, and her children clung to her terrified. The police on scene quickly arrested her boyfriend and sent her to the hospital.

The hospital connected Mary to SafeHaven, and she and her children left the hospital to stay in one of our shelters. They were all traumatized, broken, and withdrawn. Mary spoke very little English, but SafeHaven provided her with a Spanish-speaking case manager who was able to communicate with her, give her resources, and ensure her of her safety.

Mary began to focus on her health, and she learned that she had a high-risk pregnancy. SafeHaven ensured she received the medical treatment and care she needed. She was also connected to SafeHaven’s legal team who helped her obtain a protective order and full custody of her children as well as full custody of Joseph, Eva and the unborn baby.

Mary was motivated by her children and wanted the best life for them. She worked with her SafeHaven case manager to create an employment plan, beginning with a paid certification program and eventually finding a full-time job to support her family.

When Mary left SafeHaven’s shelter, she no longer felt broken, but empowered. She found her voice, was advocating for herself, and she was able to express her needs and desires. Mary got her own apartment through SafeHaven’s housing program and is preparing for the arrival of her new baby. Joseph and Eva feel secure having their own home and know their mom is safe, and Mary continues to look toward their bright future.
